HEH – Moment: “The international cooperation makes this project special"

Work on the future land-based terminal for liquefied gases has been in full swing since last summer. Ignacio Casasempere, who has been project director since 2021, is playing a key role in this. With over 25 years of experience in large-scale international projects, he brings the technical expertise and strategic vision that are crucial for a project of this magnitude.

What is the current status of the construction site?
We have made good progress in recent months. The planning work for detailed engineering is about 80 per cent complete. We are at a similar stage with the procurement of equipment. The most important components have already been ordered and are in production. These include, for example, the tanks or parts of the technical facilities. At the end of May, we received approval for the work on the slabs of the LNG tanks. This was an enormously important step for us. The LNG tanks are the heart of the terminal. For my team and me, it's exciting to see how our plans are  becoming reality.

What are the next steps at the construction site?
Once the slabs have been completed, we will begin erecting the tank walls. These will be built up piece by piece – quite a spectacular process given the size of the tanks, requiring immense precision and, of course, one that will be covered in detail in a future newsletter edition. In parallel, we plan to start working on the foundations for the process units and buildings, which include, for example, the regasification units.

Are there any special highlights in the project?
Beyond its sheer scale, the international collaboration makes this project truly stand out. Many of the key components – from technical systems to specialist equipment – are being manufactured in Europe, Japan and the United States. It’s fascinating to see how these parts from different countries come together on site.

Ignacio Casasempere is 55 years old and has a master's degree in engineering and project management. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family or participating in sports activities such as hiking and cycling.
