HEH – Portrait: "The precision fascinates me every single day"

For over a year, Carlos Magan, who joined us from Sacyr, has been working as LNG Tank Manager for the construction of the LNG tanks. The Spanish native brings over 20 years of experience in LNG tank construction from projects around the globe – from Chile to South Korea and Belgium. With his expertise, he ensures that the complex construction processes run smoothly and that the highest quality standards are met.

Carlos, what exactly is your role as LNG Tank Manager?
My main responsibility is to coordinate the construction of the two LNG tanks including quality assurance. With a capacity of 240,000 cubic metres, these tanks are among the largest in the world. Together with my team, which currently consists of Antonio Caño, our Mechanical Construction Supervisor and Angelo Lavino being the Civil Construction Supervisor, I oversee the construction work, review the required documentation, and ensure that all tasks meet the strict quality requirements. We monitor every phase of the construction – from planning and design to execution and commissioning. Quality assurance is always the top priority. Additionally, we support subcontractors with our expertise to find the best possible solutions. This project demands the highest level of precision, as the tanks must withstand extreme temperatures of up to -170 degrees Celsius.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love the challenges that come with building LNG tanks. It’s fascinating to see how an idea turns into a structure that is built with extreme accuracy. My passion for this work began over 20 years ago when I was first involved in an LNG tank project by chance. It’s exciting to work with an international team on such a dynamic project and to find solutions together. Even though it can sometimes be challenging – especially when delays occur – the progress we achieve on-site motivates me every single day.

How do you relax after work?
After work, I often go to the gym to clear my head. My wife is here with me in Stade, and we try to make the most of our time together – whether it’s going for a walk or enjoying dinner. On weekends, we like to take trips to cities like Hamburg to experience the big-city atmosphere we’re used to from our hometown, Madrid. That said, Stade has its own charm, and we also appreciate the peace and nature we’ve found here.

Carlos Magan studied mechanical engineering at the University of Madrid. The 64-year-old has worked on LNG projects in countries such as Spain, Chile, South Korea, and Belgium. Since October 2024, he has been serving as the LNG Tank Manager for the terminal project in Stade.
