HEH – Hand in Hand: Powering Up – Avacon builds the Electrical Infrastructure for the HEH Terminal

On behalf of Hanseatic Energy Hub, the Technical Network Services division of Avacon Netz GmbH is constructing the electrical infrastructure needed to connect the terminal to Avacon's 110 kV grid. They provide customers with tailored, grid-adjacent services to ensure their energy reaches the network safely with a product portfolio ranging from turnkey substation solutions and customer connection substations to AC and DC charging infrastructure, medium-voltage line construction, and street lighting.

Securing a 50-Megawatt Connection to the 110 kV Grid
The team's task is to connect the liquefied gas terminal to Avacon's 110 kV grid, providing a planned connection capacity of up to 50 megawatts. To achieve this, the existing 110 kV substation at Abbenfleth Süd is being upgraded and expanded to meet the new requirements, and a 2-kilometre medium-voltage line is being laid to the terminal.

Initial construction work at the substation is already underway, focusing primarily on groundwork and the installation of precast concrete foundations. Work on the medium-voltage line began last year. Using horizontal directional drilling, conduit pipes were laid through the dyke area and onto the liquefied gas terminal site, after which the medium-voltage cables were pulled through. Final cable-pulling and installation work is currently being completed. For more details, have a look at this LinkedIn post.

Next Steps: Transformers, Cable Connections and Line Extension
The next phase involves establishing a 110 kV cable connection to the Avacon overhead line at the substation. Particular attention is being paid to the concrete foundations for the new 110 kV power transformers, which are due to be delivered later this year. The medium-voltage line will also continue to be extended towards the substation. As the route passes through an industrial area, the key challenge will be keeping traffic disruption to a minimum while advancing the project on schedule.
